Week 3-Ch. 4 & 5

Thoughts, language and the social world.

I find myself thinking the most about attachment in this weeks readings. I instantly had an amazing amount of love for my daughter as soon as she arrived. I felt that attachment. She was mine! I just wanted to do everything I possibly could for my daughter like sleeping with her, soothing her at all hours of the day even if mommy was tired, breastfeeding, bathing, and carrying her from place to place, playing with her, changing her diapers and clothes. I felt like I was the one who she was mainly attached with. I mean, I was the one who produced the food for her; when she needed it she came directly to me. It's so incredible to think that the most important time of our lives begin at times we will not remember. I wonder if the infant- parent attachment we began was correct in a sense that the social relationships later in her life will be what I hope for.

I say WOW when I think about how much development occurs from womb to tomb. Ok not that far, but it sounded good. Thinking about how much development happens from birth to the first year of age. Sounds, expressions, smell, taste, feel- it all just happens pretty much at the same time in my eyes. I understand that there are different degrees to when we actually figure out and think deeply about for example how the green grass feels gently tickling our hands and why. At ten months my daughter was walking! Looking at little babies now I just cannot picture any other baby that size actually being capable of walking at the time. They are still so tiny. I wonder why she began to walk "early" and if the attachment played part, or genes or anything else that may have been a factor?

Being naturally curious is a must. How are we possibly suppose to live life and learn if we weren't curious. Obviously we wouldn't have all the technology and equipment that we have access to nowadays. " Piaget believed that children are naturally curious" Piaget is a good man for thinking that way and I agree with him. Its interesting that our minds are able to categorize things for us to remember. Now if that would work on the outside as well as the inside I could possibly be the most organized person. That's a happy thought.

I am really interested in language and I speak another language myself (Spanish). I started learning Spanish when I was about 15 years old and just developed a passion for it so I continued to learn. I don't see myself being able to learn another language though because I am getting older and my brain had made rules to follow and understand . I don't feel like it is possible but then again I haven't tried. My daughter has a major advantage, I feel, she is Mexican/ American and she has grown up in a bilingual environment. I personally don't speak to her in Spanish fluently but we recently went over the Spanish words she know right off the top of her head and what that means in English and how to say a phrase from English to Spanish. She is so special to me! I was so impressed. I can say commands in Spanish like close the door and without even thinking or asking what that means she goes and does it. I feel like Spanish is and has been inside her brain from birth. It interests me and makes me wonder all the time, but then I could just be a very proud crazy mother.

  1. I tried to post this once already so sorry if it shows up twice : )

I think speaking another language is such a gift! To be able to converse with than many more people is so amazing and opens the door to so many more friends and people to learn from! I tried learning spanish a few years back at a college I was attending. It was very hard for me. Im not sure if it was the structure of the class or the language itself. I think I will try again at some point because the Spanish language is so beautiful to me. My son goes to a daycare that teaches a LOT of Spanish to the kids. I think its great! Its wonderful (and makes me a little jealous) to watch his little brain soak it all up. He comes home and teaches me and anyone else who will listen Spanish words! I wish they would have done that when I was younger. It seems like the schools are embracing other languages more and encouraging the kids who speak primarily English to learn another language and culture instead of concentrating solely on getting kids who speak other languages to cross over to only English.

  2. Yes, It's like a whole other world when you speak and meet people of different culture. Since you think the language is beautiful then I don't think you should have too much of a problem. I believe that if you have motivation to accomplish something then you can do it. Don't give up ;) . I hope you can try a Spanish class again soon. My daughter was in a bilingual daycare and it was really great and I really liked it but they didn't open until 7:30am and I started work at 6:30am :( so I had to switch. She truly learned a lot. I hope you and your son learns lots from each other.

  3. Reading your blog I remember when my kids were younger and growing up I always thought they were above and beyond for their age and it makes you feel a certain kind of proud. It's almost overwhelming to think that you made your child, you created this human being so when they achieve a goal its almost as if you are both accomplishing something.
    Nice post!
